The day is celebrated as a tribute to the first, and one of the greatest ever engineers hailing from India Sir M. Visvesvaraya. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village in Karnataka. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is considered a pioneer in the field of engineering in India.

He was also credited with formulating the Block System automatic gates that seal under the situation of a flood.
